Brother Paul R. Wineman, Washington '55, unveiled during the 2004 Grand Arch Council his fellowship for graduate study at the Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies (CAMES) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon. Brother Wineman made his gift in hopes that other alumni would come forward to make additional fellowships available in other areas of the world.

The Wineman Fellowship for International Studies supports the mission of the Foundation to foster the development of leaders and to promote academic excellence in higher education by:

• Strengthening an awareness and respect for cultural differences;
• Encouraging scholars to dedicate their personal and professional lives to understanding the Middle East and the “global marketplace”; and
• Fostering a lifelong association with Phi Kappa Psi.

Applicants must be Phi Psis in good standing, single, aged 21 to 28 and must show how a Masters degree in Middle Eastern studies is consistent with their academic and career goals. The Fellowship is meant to prepare the applicant for a career doing business in the Middle East as a representative of an American company involved in business in that part of the world or to serve in positions there as an employee of the U.S. Government.

To enter in the fall, the application deadline to AUB and the Foundation is April 30th, 2008. Spring entrant applications are due November 1st, 2008. It should be noted that being selected as the Fellowship recipient is no guarantee of admission to AUB. The winner is responsible to apply and be admitted to the AUB Masters program. Also this fellowship is provided to one student at a time. Thus, the fellowship is not offered every semester.
