Kent P. Newmark Born in Los Angeles, Kent attended Beverly Hills High, where he played on the Southern Section Championship tennis team and also pole vaulted. At Cal, he majored in philosophy and joined Phi Psi his freshman year in 1956. Like many at the time, Kent worked his way through college hashing, working at the Berkeley Tennis Club - where he also lettered 3 years for Cal - and as house manager for the chapter. He served as president of the chapter his senior year and was Cal Gamma's first recipient of the Solon E. Summerfield award from the Foundation. After four years of ROTC at Berkeley, Kent received his commission as a second lieutenant. He reported for active duty at Ft. Knox, Kentucky where he completed tank school and was placed in command of basic training companies. Upon completion of his service, Kent went back to Cal, receiving his M.B.A. in finance in 1964. After graduation, Kent worked in the bond department of two California banks, before joining Loomis Sayles and Company in San Francisco in 1976. There he was a bond portfolio manager for 26 years and managed large institutional pools of capital. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1994 and retired from the company in 2002. Kent lives with his wife Pat in Orinda, California and enjoys golf, tennis and squash to keep in shape. They enjoy travel and spend winters in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
