John F. Buck

John F. Buck
Indiana '75
Secretary-Treasurer

John began his education in the Corps of Cadets at The Virginia Polytechnic Institute. His work toward his degree was interrupted by four years of service in the U.S. Air Force Chaplain Section. He returned to complete his B.S. in Business Administration and then worked for Woodward and Lothrop, Inc. in Washington, D.C., where he programmed the Univac Mark I, the first commercial computer.

He returned to Virginia Tech to become one of the first members of their new Computer Science Department. During his stay there he served on President Johnson's Commission on the Use of Computers in Education. He left Virginia Tech to teach at Indiana University. While a faculty member in the Computer Science Department, working toward his Doctorate, John was given the opportunity to pledge Indiana Beta.

He served the chapter for more than twenty years, as Faculty Advisor before and Chapter Advisor after his initiation. He also has served the Fraternity as Director of Scholarship, Member of the Commission on Ethics, and is a member of the Order of the S.C.

Retired from Indiana University and then from Stephen F. Austin State University, John lives in Nacogdoches, Texas and is active in his church, is an accomplished organist, plays a “somewhat” game of golf, and continues to serve the Fraternity and the Foundation.
