Phi Kappa Psi Foundation
Eligibility and award requirements

Any graduate Phi Psi with a proven interest in the Middle East and who has been accepted to the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CAMES) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) with a goal of obtaining a Masters Degree in Middle Eastern Studies may apply.

Candidates will have made a conscious decision to include a graduate degree in Middle Eastern studies and proficiency in Arabic language to their educational goals and should have examples during their undergraduate careers of their interest and involvement in Middle Eastern study or language. This Fellowship is not intended to be simply a chance to “visit” or “vacation” overseas.

Applicants should be unmarried and 21 - 28 years of age. Recipients are required to live in one of the school’s dormitories during their period of study. Home stays with local Arab families may be arranged for a small portion of the 18 month experience but are not to exceed 21 days. Applicants will be encouraged to travel to neighboring Arab states during the pursuit of their degree at AUB.

Applicants will be required to furnish their own round trip airfare to and from Lebanon, in addition to any personal living or entertainment expenses incurred away from the University. Applicants for the Foundation Fellowship must be accepted to AUB prior to applying for the Wineman Fellowship in International Studies and complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Priority will be given to applicants whose career goals include working, living or doing business in the Middle East, upon graduation from AUB or who have lived in the Middle East, but who are not native to the area. Current or recent employment with a company with branch offices in the Middle East is a further advantage.

To qualify for the full Fellowship, recipients must attend and graduate with a degree in Middle Eastern Studies within 18 months of entering the program at AUB. Arabic language courses must be a component of the total course of study.

Applicants will be required to sign an agreement certifying they will graduate with a Masters Degree in Middle Eastern studies from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. Partial payments will be made to AUB, as required, based on the Fellow’s progress towards completion of the degree program.

Applicants must agree to pay back their Fellowship to the Foundation if they fail to successfully complete the Masters Degree Program at AUB or fail to comply with the Fellowships Eligibility and Award Requirements. Terms of repayment can be arranged, consistent with rates and terms of current Federal student loan programs. The repayments to the Foundation will not be tax deductible.

The Fellow will spend at least a day with Brother Paul Wineman prior to traveling to Lebanon and will then be required to file a progress report to the selection committee at the completion of each term. Additional correspondence and contact is encouraged and may be required.
